The Hall Tavern

The Archaeological Dig and the Quest to Uncover the Past

Among the clues to the tavern’s location are photographs from the 1950s, showing Frank Weneger, the local hermit, pointing to the spot where the tavern once stood. In one photo, he stands next to the lilac bush, a silent sentinel marking the location of this forgotten treasure. These photos, along with oral histories and historical records, have inspired us to dig deeper—literally.

We’re planning an archaeological dig to uncover the tavern’s foundation and learn more about the lives of those who lived, worked, and gathered here. What can the stones and artifacts tell us about Captain Jabez Hall and his family? What stories do they hold about the travelers who passed through, the soldiers who rested here, or the community that thrived around it?

This project is about more than just uncovering old stones. It’s about connecting with the past and honoring the legacy of those who came before us. By bringing the Hall Tavern’s story to light, we hope to preserve a piece of Berkshire County’s history and share it with the community. It’s a reminder that the land we care for today has a rich and vibrant past, and that every stone, every artifact, has a story to tell.

As we prepare for the dig, we invite you to follow along on this journey. We’ll share updates, photos, and discoveries as we uncover the layers of history beneath our feet. Together, we’ll piece together the story of Captain Jabez Hall’s tavern and the people who made it a cornerstone of our community.

So, here’s to the lilac bush, the stone wall, and the hidden foundation waiting to be found. Here’s to Captain Jabez Hall, his sons, and the countless others who walked these grounds before us. And here’s to the stories we’ll uncover—stories of courage, resilience, and community that remind us of where we’ve been and inspire us to cherish the history beneath our feet.

Stay tuned for more updates as we dig into the past and bring the Hall Tavern back to life!
